When can you wear a nipple prosthesis after a mastectomy?

One of the most frequent questions: how long should you wait after surgery? The answer may surprise you.

After a mastectomy, many women wonder how long they need to wait before they can wear a nipple prosthesis. The good news is that our silicone prostheses can be applied as soon as the stitches are removed, generally 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure.

This is one of the major advantages of The Nipples Lab prostheses compared with paramedical dermopigmentation (areola tattooing), which requires waiting at least 12 months for the scar to fully stabilise.

Why so soon?

Our CE Class 1 certified medical silicone is non-allergenic and poses no risk to freshly healed skin. The B-460 medical adhesive is also certified and dermatologically tested.

The prosthesis doesn't sit aggressively on the scar: it rests on the healthy skin around the operated area.

What to check before application

  • Stitches must have been removed
  • The skin must no longer show any open wound
  • If in doubt, consult your surgeon
  • Avoid application if radiotherapy is currently being given to the area

The application protocol

1. Cleanse and dry the skin thoroughly 2. Apply a thin layer of B-460 adhesive 3. Wait 30 seconds for the adhesive to become tacky 4. Position the prosthesis gently 5. Press softly for 30 seconds

The prosthesis then holds in place for up to 10 days, even in the shower or during exercise.

A step toward psychological recovery

Beyond the aesthetic aspect, recovering a familiar silhouette quickly after surgery has a considerable psychological impact. Many patients report an immediate renewed sense of confidence.
