Paramedical dermopigmentation (areola tattooing) and silicone prostheses are two radically different approaches to aesthetic reconstruction after a mastectomy. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.
The nipple prosthesis
- Advantages:
- Application possible as soon as the stitches are removed (2-3 weeks after surgery)
- Highly realistic three-dimensional rendering
- Reversible and adjustable
- Can be removed at any time
- Ideal before any reconstructive surgery
- Disadvantages:
- Requires daily application (or every 10 days)
- Regular maintenance is necessary
- Initial cost to consider
Paramedical dermopigmentation
- Advantages:
- Permanent result
- No daily commitment
- Looks very natural once healed
- Disadvantages:
- Mandatory wait of at least 12 months post-surgery
- Irreversible technique
- Requires several sessions
- 2D result (no relief)
Our recommendation
The two solutions are often complementary rather than competing. Many of our clients start with a prosthesis in the first weeks after surgery, then opt for dermopigmentation 12 to 18 months later, while continuing to use the prosthesis on certain occasions.
The Nipples Lab prosthesis can also be a permanent solution for those who do not wish to be tattooed, or who are not eligible for dermopigmentation.
